BSC & ISM Code
1. About Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC)
Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) was established on 5th February 1972 under a Presidential Order. It is a state-owned autonomous corporation responsible for Bangladesh’s shipping and transportation sector. The headquarters of BSC is located in Chattogram, and the corporation operates its vessels in compliance with international maritime regulations.
2. International Safety Management (ISM) Code
The ISM Code provides a structured framework for the safe management and operation of ships and the prevention of marine pollution. Issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the code is implemented worldwide, including Bangladesh.
Key objectives of the ISM Code include:
- Establishing a Safety Management System (SMS) within shipping companies.
- Defining clear roles and responsibilities for personnel on board and ashore.
- Appointing a Designated Person Ashore (DPA) to monitor safety and environmental compliance.
- Ensuring regular audits, surveys, and certification to maintain compliance.
3. Implementation of ISM Code at BSC
BSC has implemented a Safety Management System in line with the ISM Code. This system ensures that vessels operate safely, environmental standards are maintained, and operational procedures are clear. Despite progress, challenges such as older vessels and regular maintenance remain, which BSC continues to address.
4. Importance of ISM Compliance
Compliance with the ISM Code is crucial because it ensures safe and efficient vessel operations, reduces environmental risks, enhances international credibility, and prevents penalties or reputational damage. BSC’s adherence to the ISM Code reflects its commitment to safety, reliability, and professional maritime operations.
